Hand-Raised Parrotlets

At Nurtured Nests, our hand-raised Parrotlets are raised with patience, care, and plenty of gentle interaction. These tiny parrots may be small in size, but they have huge personalities, making them a bold and entertaining companion for the right home.

Personality & Temperament

Parrotlets are often described as “big birds in a small body.” They are confident, intelligent, and full of attitude.

They are:

  • Bold and fearless
  • Curious and highly active
  • Intelligent and quick learners
  • Strong-willed and sometimes feisty

Hand-raised parrotlets can bond closely with their owner, but they still maintain a very independent and spirited nature.

What They’re Like as Pets

Parrotlets are engaging and lively companions, but they are best suited to owners who understand their personality.

As pets, they:

  • Enjoy interaction but on their own terms
  • Can learn tricks and step-up training
  • Need regular attention to stay tame
  • May become nippy if bored or frustrated

They are ideal for people who appreciate a bird with a bit of sass and confidence.

Diet & Nutrition

A balanced, varied diet is essential for a healthy parrotlet.

We recommend:

  • A high-quality pellet or seed mix as a base
  • Daily fresh vegetables (leafy greens, carrot, broccoli, capsicum)
  • Small amounts of fruit as treats
  • Fresh water changed daily

Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and processed foods.

Cage & Living Environment

Despite their small size, parrotlets need plenty of space and enrichment.

Their cage should:

  • Be large enough for movement and play
  • Include multiple perches of varying sizes
  • Offer plenty of toys, especially shreddable ones
  • Be cleaned regularly

They also need:

  • Daily time outside the cage (in a safe space)
  • Mental stimulation to prevent boredom
  • A calm, secure environment with routine

Understanding Parrotlet Behaviour

Parrotlets are not typically cuddly birds and can be more assertive than they look.

They may:

  • Be territorial over their cage or toys
  • Nip if they feel uncomfortable or overstimulated
  • Prefer limited handling compared to more relaxed species
  • Become bossy if boundaries aren’t set early

Consistency and gentle training are key to building a positive relationship.

Independent but Bonded

Parrotlets can form strong bonds with their owner, but they are not overly clingy.

They often:

  • Enjoy being near you rather than constantly handled
  • Interact in short, energetic bursts
  • Show affection through attention and curiosity
  • Maintain a strong sense of independence

Respecting their boundaries helps build trust and reduces unwanted behaviours.

A Tiny Bird with a Big Personality

With proper care, parrotlets can live 10–15 years, offering years of entertainment and companionship.

Their bold nature, intelligence, and cheeky charm make them a unique and rewarding pet for those who appreciate a confident little bird.
