Hand-Raised Pet Budgies

At Nurtured Nests, our hand-raised budgies are lovingly cared for from a young age, resulting in gentle, affectionate birds that make wonderful companions. These little personalities are full of charm, curiosity, and intelligence perfect for both first-time bird owners and experienced keepers.

Personality & Temperament

Hand-raised budgies are known for their friendly and social nature. Because they are raised with regular human interaction, they tend to form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy being part of daily life.

They are:

  • Playful and energetic
  • Curious and intelligent
  • Gentle and easy to handle
  • Capable of learning tricks and even mimicking words

Each budgie has its own unique personality some are cheeky and adventurous, while others are calm and cuddly but all thrive on attention and companionship.

What They’re Like as Pets

Budgies are interactive, engaging pets that bring joy into any home. They love to chirp, explore, and spend time with their humans.

As pets, they:

  • Enjoy daily interaction and out-of-cage time
  • Can be trained with patience and positive reinforcement
  • Are relatively low-maintenance compared to larger parrots
  • Do best with consistent routines and a calm, safe environment

They are perfect for individuals, couples, and families who can give them the time and attention they need.

Diet & Nutrition

A healthy budgie is a happy budgie! A balanced diet is essential for their wellbeing.

We recommend:

  • A high-quality seed mix or pellets as a base diet
  • Daily fresh vegetables (such as spinach, carrot, broccoli)
  • Occasional fruit treats (like apple or berries)
  • Fresh, clean water changed daily

Avoid feeding avocado, chocolate, caffeine, or sugary/processed foods, as these can be harmful.

Cage & Living Environment

Creating the right home setup is key to a happy, thriving budgie.

Your budgie’s cage should:

  • Be spacious enough for flying and stretching wings
  • Include natural perches of varying sizes
  • Have toys for mental stimulation (swings, bells, chew toys)
  • Be kept clean with regular maintenance

Budgies also benefit from:

  • Safe, supervised time outside the cage
  • A well-lit area with natural daylight (but no direct drafts or extreme temperatures)
  • A quiet place to rest at night

Understanding Budgie Behaviour

While budgies are affectionate, social birds, it’s important to understand that they are not naturally cuddly pets in the same way as a dog or cat.

Budgies are prey animals, which means their instincts are built around staying alert and independent. Even when hand-raised, most budgies do not enjoy being patted or stroked over their bodies. Some may tolerate light interaction around the head, but many prefer not to be touched at all.

Independent, Not Clingy

Budgies show their affection in different ways. Rather than seeking constant physical contact, they tend to:

  • Sit near you or on your shoulder
  • Chirp, sing, and “talk” to you
  • Follow your movements with curiosity
  • Enjoy your presence without needing to be handled

They are companion birds, not cuddly pets meaning they bond with you, but still value their personal space.

A Loving Companion for Years to Come

With proper care, budgies can live 7–15 years, becoming a cherished part of your family. Their bright personalities and loving nature make them one of the most rewarding pets you can have.
